NOTABLE COMMUNITY FRIENDSHIPS
One of our main project missions is to form long-lasting friendships with small businesses and organizations in our Tompkins County community. Shown below is a list of our community friends. As we learn, educate, and expand, we hope this list will grow. Any business or organization with whom we have met and shared extensive information is listed as a friend.
We are so grateful to have Sustainable Tompkins as our friend, mentor, and guide throughout this project. Sustainable Tompkins is the organization responsible for allocating $5,000 in grant funds to students across Tompkins County. CITY/TOWN OF ITHACA
Our local government has been tremendously help throughout this project. Our government is an important stakeholder in refrigeration, but less conventionally than a supermarket or restaurant. Since Ithaca has an existing green building code by which all new buildings must comply, refrigeration is an important component to help reach sustainable goals. Above all, Ithaca has supported us in establishing connections with experts and businesses across the community.
This summer, we met with Ramsey Brous, head of facilities at Ithaca Bakery. In the community, Ithaca Bakery not only provides beautiful and tasty food, but also an example of environmental consciousness. Ramsey works with Isaac Refrigerants of Rochester to make sure that his refrigerators maintain legal leak rates, and is actively interested in pursuing sustainable refrigerants.
WEGMANS FOOD MARKETS
In late September, we met with Sheryl Gillow, an HVAC engineer for Wegmans Food Markets. Wegmans is truly leading the charge when it comes to sustainability, keeping in mind three major stakeholders: the environment, their consumers, and the business. Wegmans is slowly experimenting with alternative refrigerants to HFC that carry far less greenhouse gas potential, such as carbon dioxide and ammonia, and even has several all-sustainable facilities in the Rochester area.
